چکیده

Cuttlefish are masters of disguise, rapidly changing colour to blend with their backgrounds. A new study shows that they break camouflage to direct warning messages at certain predators, but only those likely to be dissuaded by visual signals.

Cooperative signalling between opponents in fish fights

Cichlids of the species Nannacara anomala employ several colour displays during fights which do not seem to signal either fighting ability or motivation. How should these colour displays be interpreted when winning is reliably predicted by weight asymmetries? Medial Line colour displays were associated with, and predicted, tail-beating, while Vertical Bar colour displays were associated with mo...

Signalling displays during predator-prey interactions in a Puerto Rican anole, Anolis cristatellus

We examined conspicuous signalling displays in the context of predator-prey interactions. To determine in which context Puerto Rican crested anoles, Anolis cristatellusperform conspicuous signals, we exposed wild lizards to a model of a natural snake predator. The lizards gave six behavioural responses to the model: immobility, predator inspection, flight, lateral face-off, dewlapping and push-...

Behavioural relevance of polarization sensitivity as a target detection mechanism in cephalopods and fishes.

Aquatic habitats are rich in polarized patterns that could provide valuable information about the environment to an animal with a visual system sensitive to polarization of light. Both cephalopods and fishes have been shown to behaviourally respond to polarized light cues, suggesting that polarization sensitivity (PS) may play a role in improving target detection and/or navigation/orientation. ...

Discrete conventional signalling of a continuous variable.

In aggressive interactions, animals often use a discrete set of signals, while the properties being signalled are likely to be continuous, for example fighting ability or value of victory. Here we investigate a particular model of fighting that allows for conventional signalling of subjective resource value to occur. Perfect signalling and no signalling are not evolutionarily stable strategies ...

Rituals or Good Works: Social Signalling in Religious Organizations

We develop a model of social signalling of religiosity and cooperative behaviour in religious organizations. The model embeds a ritual-based religious organization in which signalling arises through the use of costly rituals, and a discipline-based religious organization in which such signalling occurs through the monitoring of past behaviour. We use this framework to contrast -positively and n...
